Introduction

The german Technical Coorperation (GTZ) is supporting pakistan in overcoming the lack of qualified public health experts.Strengthening the Health Services Acadmy in Islamabad by making it a Regional Center of Excellence in Public Health Education and Research constitues improvement in Pakistan's health system.

One of the main problems plaguing Pakistan's health system is the lack of qualified personnel.there is a dearth of experts in public health and health management in the public and private health sector.This is attributed to the limited public health are inadequate.Continued education and postgraduate training in public health are urgently required.

History

With assistance from the german Technical Coorperation (GTZ),HSA offered a postgraduate programme in public Health in 1996.During the past ten years nine cohorts of alumni have graduate from the institute with a Master's Degree.These alumni are now engaged in a wide range of decision-making positions across Pakistan in both the public and private sector.The Academy has become one of the most important education institutions for public health in Pakistan.

Project Objective

The health Services Academy performs its mandate to train managers and provide advisory services on health policy autonomously and efficiently.

The methodological approach of the GTZ project involves

Development of an academic training and research institution of excelence in public health sciences.

Institutional and organisational development with focus on autonomy.

Capacity building of teaching and administrative staff.

Promotion of academic exchange and partnerships with relevant national and international institutions.

Technical support of a research in public health,including establishment of a field demonstration area.

Advisory services by long term and short term experts,upgrading of the teaching capacities.

Total duration of the project:June 2004 to May 2011.
