A national consultative workshop of various stakeholders in the Water Sector on the topic of National Drinking Water Quality Standards is being held on November 6 - 8, 2006 and November 13-15, 2006.

Pakistan is one of the countries where waterborne diseases are quite common. There have been a number of outbreaks of Acute Watery Diarrhoea in the recent past in both rural and urban areas. It has been felt with great concern that the country must have its own drinking water standards to become guidelines for drinking water quality. The National Drinking Water Quality Standards have now been drafted and various stakeholders in the water sector are invited through this workshop to deliberate on these standards which would then be printed and disseminated for a wider circulation to the policy to implementation level.

This workshop, the first of two to be held in this connection, is going to be held at the Health Services Academy, Chak Shahzad, Islamabad. The draft of the quality drinking water standards, to be finalized under the collaborative sponsorship of the World Health Organization and the Government of Pakistan, is available on the website in PDF format.
